Jon Joseph Gentry

Social Justice in the American Theatre

Jon Gentry (he/they) is a Black and queer theatre artist whose work explores the search for "Home." What is it? Where is it? Are we truly ever there? Born and raised in Houston, Jon's Southern roots undergird his artistic expression with an unflinching perspective on Black queerness in the US. His award-winning solo show "Black Bastard" (2024 Soaring Solo Social Impact Award) has been presented at the Santa Monica Playhouse, PlayGround Solofest, Whitefire Solofest, and the Davidson/Valentini Theatre co-produced by the LA LGBT Center and ONE Institute. With an MFA from American Conservatory Theater and a BA from Harvard University, Jon blends the classical and the contemporary. As a faculty member at Los Angeles Performing Arts Conservatory and through collaborations with The Moth and Young Storytellers, he demonstrates his dedication to performance and education. Invited to the inaugural GLAAD Black Queer Creative Summit, Jon is a storyteller who thrives at the intersection of truth, artistry, and innovation. His work exposes assumptions while creating space for nuanced representations of Black life and universal human experiences. Follow his journey @theejongentry or visit theejongentry.com.
